| 内容記述 | The generative literature has often focused on the obligatory nature of complement control. This means that the referent of one of the matrix DPs is fully identical with that of the null subject of the complement clause. However, there are various complement control cases, such as split control, partial control, and implicit dative control, which do not entertain full identity between the syntactically represented matrix DP and the null complement subject. The present paper argues that a complement control relation is a V-CP relation, and that we can dispense with a DP controller. Based on Japanese data, I propose that the controlled complement has its own subject-like referential property associated with its own force. Thus, the null subject does not have to depend on a matrix DP for its reference. I illustrate that the relevant referential properties are best captured by the speaker/addressee features. My proposal naturally accounts for split control, partial control, and implicit control as well as the canonical subject and object control. It also explains the de se reading characteristic of complement control. | |||||
