| 内容記述 | An intervention effect is originally a linguistic phenomenon where a scope related element\ cannot appear between a question operator and its trace. This effect is observed in wh-questions,\ alternative questions and yes/no questions across languages. In this paper, I focus on the\ denotation of two types of yes/no questions in Mandarin Chinese and show that scope-related\ elements expand the denotation of questions to include a VERUM operator, which induces the\ various intervention effects. In order to define the denotation of questions, I distinguish two ways\ to answer yes/no questions in Mandarin Chinese and show that each type of answer represents\ different interpretations of a yes/no question. On the basis of this distinction, I propose that the\ denotation of a question containing a focus-sensitive operator is not a partition of possible worlds\ but rather a relation between the proposition and the common ground. |
