| 内容記述 | This paper investigates the activities of Giovanni Vittorio Rosi [1867-?], a ballet master and a director,\ during his years at the Imperial Theatre in Tokyo. This study aims to illustrate his attempt to introduce\ ballet to Japan through investigation and analysis of his methods of teaching and his dance works.\ Rosi was invited to the Imperial Theatre in Tokyo (Teigeki) as a teacher in the opera department.\ During his four years, Rosi directed 15 works of dance, 11 works of opera or operetta and 12 works of\ drama. He strictly taught members of the opera department about classical ballet techniques based from\ the point of view of anatomy, and attempted to improve their body to adjust to western ballet style.\ He endeavored to teach ballet, not only physical techniques, but also mime through using members on\ the stage during the performance. Out of a total of 15 works 4 works represent the core of Rosi’s style\ which symbolizes the unity of physical and emotional elements. These historical facts support the view\ suggested by the previous studies that Rosi was the first ballet teacher in Japan. |
