| 内容記述 | Walter Willson Cobbett (1847-1937), the editor and main author of Cobbett's Cyclopedic Survey of Chamber Music (1929-30), is an amateur musician and patron of chamber music in early twentieth century Britain. The Survey is highly acclaimed even today as a useful reference book for chamber music. The purpose of this article is to analyze its characteristics from the viewpoint of amateurism by focusing on Cobbett's relationship with the professional musical world. The articles in Cobbett.s book by a number of experts from inside and outside the country, including Cobbet's references to and citations from an extensive literature, contribute to the achievement of its highly academic level as a reference book. Owing to these professional contributions, it contains extensive information both for amateurs and professionals, as well as suggestions for improvement of musical life among people. Cobbett appeals to the musical world as an amateur, not only by promoting amateur-oriented activities but also by criticizing the intellectualism of musical academism in contrast to the layperson.s appreciation of music. However, he deeply recognizes the importance of professional expertise and, without negating it, adds the viewpoints of amateurism. As a result, Survey indicates plural viewpoints from both the amateur and professional musical world. | |||||
