| 内容記述 | Fujokagami (1887) is a morals textbook for girls written in a biographical style, compiled by Shigeki Nishimura, an official in the Department of the Imperial Household, according to the wishes of Empress Haruko, the wife of Emperor Meiji. It is composed of 120 exempla of women in six volumes. To clarify the characteristics of this textbook, this study examines the composition of the sources of exempla used in the manuscript and the method of selecting them from each source. The results show that the sources include various books such as Japanese biographical and historical books, Chinese women’s biographies, a Western biographical encyclopedia of women, and translated morals textbooks. The diversity of these sources has resulted in the formation of the distinguishing features of Fujokagami. In addition, the compiler, while selecting the exempla from these books, has adopted not only common contents about filial duty, chastity, and maternal affection but also other contents about various items of virtue and groups of distinctive exempla. It is concluded that this variety also has led to the distinguishing features of Fujokagami. | |||||
