| 内容記述 | In this paper, I clarify how the academics perceived the relationship between the state and the university and opposed the total war regime since the 1930s by analyzing Masamichi Royama’s reaction against the Hiraga Purge. Royama perceived the relationship between the state and the university as one that should exist within an academic context: the university is regarded as specific functional group which embraces professors and students with various ideas and exists for the need of the society. The reality of the university, however, that came to light at the event of the purge was far from his idea of an academic community, and finally he resigned his post, having feelings of indignation and helplessness. He did not support the idea that the purge was unavoidable. His ideal that a university could be a university by keeping distance from the state was collapsed by the purge. His conviction and pride hold significance in examining the thoughts of the prewar academics. However, his criticism against the purge had weakness, in that he lacked the awareness of the ambivalence of the privileged university autonomy and freedom of research beyond validity of its content, and this weakness came from his academic pride. | |||||
