| 内容記述 | Nation-building through science and technology is a central educational policy in Japan, but most regular class teachers in elementary schools lack confidence in teaching science. Many people in industry, government and academia believe that science specialists who are non-class teachers should teach science in elementary schools. Another standpoint is that regular class teachers have the merit to teach science more effectively than science specialists, because they know the pupils’ educational background and needs very well. Contrary to general belief, it is common that non-class teachers working in Japanese elementary schools teach science, music and home economics, even though they are not well qualified in their specialty subjects. Thus, principals must hire science specialists, if the government decides to require all science classes to be taught by non-class teachers. Improvement of in service as well as pre-service teacher training is necessary to provide real science specialists for elementary schools. | |||||
