| 内容記述 | Many direct quotations in Japanese conversation, most typically the ones between young peers, end with the particle mitaina. This study aims to identify the functions of direct quotations marked by mitaina by analyzing eight sets of group discussions in an undergraduate class. Each group of four students brainstormed and selected an attractive catch phrase for their academic program within twenty minutes. The analysis showed that quotations ending with mitaina have the following expressive features: ・demonstrate a speaker's own thoughts, ideas, and feelings in a less descriptive way ・depict previous utterances in a detailed or vivid way ・express a speaker's hesitation or lesser commitment to a bold presentation ・invite other participants' responses and/or laughter These observations suggest that quotations with mitaina in Japanese group discussions serve as a communication strategy that enables participants to conduct their discussions smoothly and with humor. | |||||
