| 内容記述 | Shohgaku-Chiri-Mondou is a geography textbook published in 1874, the year after the publication of Chiri-Shoho by the Ministry of Education. This paper has two purposes. The first is to clarify the source book of Shohgaku-Chiri-Mondou and the second is to compare Shohgaku-Chiri-Mondou with Chri-Shoho. Ide Inosuke, the author of Shohgaku-Chiri-Mondou, wrote that he used Cornell's geography textbook(s) as source book(s). There are 6 Cornell geography textbooks, but Ide did not mention which textbook he used. This paper collates Shohgaku-Chiri-Mondou with the 6 textbooks word-by-word and concludes the source book is Cornell's First Steps in Geography. The author of this paper previously clarified that the chief original text of Chiri-Shoho was Cornell's Primary Geography, a little more advanced textbook than Cornell's First Steps in Geography. Although both Shohgaku-Chiri-Mondou and Chri-Shoho are based on Cornell's geography textbooks, the two Japanese textbooks have the following differences. Shohgaku-Chiri-Mondou is a 50 page book and an almost complete translation of the first 44 chapters of the original text\ . On the other hand, Chiri-Shoho is a thin 13 page booklet-an abridged translation. Shohgaku-Chiri-Mondou follows the question and answer style of the original. But Chiri-Shoho converts the style into simple sentences. The differences show that the above prove Shohgaku-Chiri-Mondou is richer in contents and a better textbook for geography education than Chiri-Shoho. |
