| 内容記述 | This paper focuses on the characters of Julie and Rudy in Little Reunions. By comparing biographies with the novel, I discuss the writing of Little Reunions and its background in terms of Eileen Chang’s psychological state. Despite their contrasting personalities and 29-year age difference, Reyher and Chang formed a writing crew. Reyher struggled with illness and poverty, and Chang suffered from anxiety resulting from her life in a foreign country, yet the two were close partners and lived as a married couple for 11 years. Four pages into the autobiographical novel, there is a description of Rudy emphasizing his negative aspects, and there is also a mention of Julie’s abortion. The abortion scene is fantastical, confused, and unrealistic. After reading the novel, readers may assume that Eileen Chang’s actual life in America was also terrible. However, Chang and Reyher appear to have had a happy marriage, despite some ups and downs. Chang never had children, which may have been due to the mental and physical hurt that she experienced as a woman. Her pride and discontentedness or shame in being born into a famous family developed into a loathing for her descendants, who would inherit the family wealth. |
