| 内容記述 | Nomizo Naoko’s Tasogare no Hana: Sancta Susanna (The Flower of Twilight: Sancta Susanna, 1928), published in Nyonin Geijutsu, is written as a letter from the female protagonist “I” to Kuno, who is her sister. “I” tells Kuno her criticisms about violence against a young nun by elder nuns, which “I” witnessed in the convent. This paper argues that this criticism about the nuns’ violence can be interpreted as a superimposition of “I’s” criticism about her father’s violence against her in her childhood, through the use of Paul Hindemith’s drama Sancta Susanna (Sancta Susanna, 1921) as an intertext. “I’s” implicit narrative can be read as “I” reveals that her father’s violence is not for disciplinarian purposes but is explicitly sexual, in order for him to orgasm. Moreover, “I” demands the punishment of elder nuns for their violence. The demand for the punishment of her father for his violence and his suppression of female sexual desire is implicit. At the end of this letter, “I” quotes lines from Sancta Susanna. This can be interpreted as opening the possibility to build Nyonin Geijutsu’s female readers’ into a community of resistance to the suppression of women. |
