内容記述 | In Japanese films produced at the beginning of the 1930s, women in Japanese clothes and those in Western clothes seemed to be stereotypically presented as good and evil, respectively. Such connotations vanished after the war as Western clothes became more common among Japanese women, and the contrast between Japanese and Western clothing came to represent the generation gap between mothers and daughters. However, no study has been conducted on the relationship between film costumes and different generations.This study determines how filmmakers use Japanese and Western clothes to illustrate women of different generations in postwar Japanese films. It focuses on the film costumes for Late Autumn( 1960), a film directed by Yasujirō Ozu, who was active from the late 1920s to the early 1960s, with his diary and the recollections of the film crew. Considering the technological influence of the colorization of images and the entry of fullfledged costume designers into the industry, this work analyzed the transformation of Western and Japanese costumes in the postwar period. The mother’s Japanese clothes and the daughter’s Western clothes showed commonality in their textiles and colors. Furthermore, the harmonious design of Japanese and Western clothes indicated a good relationship between mothers and daughters. | |||||||||
