| 内容記述 | This essay examines The House of the Seven Gables （1851), which contains contrasting characterizations of “fair” and “dark” men. A “fair man,” whose beauty exposes him as an object of various gazes, is crucial to a feminist reading because it reveals some instability in a patriarchal society. The “fair man” can be described as an homme fatale, which is associated not with a fair lady who reinforces the Symbolic order but with a femme fatale, who prompts a man to have a close subversive relationship with her and to undermine patriarchal law. The examination of the “fair man” exposes the un-normative gender category at the root of American, white, middle-class male anxiety. Using a psychoanalytical approach, this paper explores how a “fair man,” Clifford, is represented in conjunction with his cousin, Jaffrey Pyncheon. While many researchers have expounded upon the “dark man” as a sinister and satanic male character, or examined the “fair lady” and “dark lady” as depicted in literary works, there are almost no studies focusing on the “fair man.” This article will unveil this remarkable bias within literary analysis a\ nd scrutinize the untouched category of the “fair man.” |
