| 内容記述 | 本論文では、岡倉天心と彼の周辺の人々を中心に１９世紀末から２０世紀初頭にかけての日本とアメリカにおいて、「母なるもの」の表象として観音がどのように生成、流通、再生していったかを考察する。近代になると日本において観音と母性の結びつきが強調され、文化的活動の場で生成されるようになった。岡倉のオペラ台本『白狐』で描かれる観音は、母性と結びつき、おおいなる慈悲者であり救済者を象徴する存在であった。このような観音像は狩野芳崖の《悲母観音像》にも通じている。１８８６年来日したアメリカ人の画家ラファージは瞑想する観音を「永遠の女性」と捉えた。彼が抱いた観音のイメージは、慈悲者としてよりも涅槃を瞑想する姿に多くを負う。しかし一方で、観音は聖母のイメージとも結びついた。そのため、ラファージがアメリカで観音のイメージを具現化した時、日本のものとは異なる観音図が再生されたのである。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | I described how Kwannon as the representation of ‘Motherhood’ was produced, changed and reproduced in both Japan and the U.S.A. from the late nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth century. In modern Japan, Kwannon was connected with motherhood and was produced in various cultural fields. In “The White Fox” written by Okakura Tenshin, Kwannon was represented as one who not only connected with motherhood, but also with mercy and salvation. An example of this image of Kwannon is seen in “Hibo Kwannon” produced by Kano Hogai. John La Farge, an American painter who traveled to Japan in 1886, described Kwannon as “the Eternal Feminine”, when showing Kwannon absorbed in the meditations of Nirvana. Of all the images of Kwannon, that is the one that the one touched him most. And at another time, when he saw a Kwannon painting, he was reminded of the Madonna. Therefore, the paintings he drew of Kwannon after returning to the U.S.A. were very different from Japanese paintings of Kwannon. | |||||
