Speech data, obtained from five Filipino / social worker interviews, were analyzed for the distribution of \u0027wa\u0027 marking for case and sentence components. Results showed the following. (1) Two-thirds of \u0027wa\u0027 usage marked the case \u0027ga\u0027 and the time adverbial, followed by \u0027ni\u0027, \u0027o\u0027, \u0027de\u0027, and finally \u0027kara\u0027, \u0027made\u0027, \u0027ni totte\u0027, and the adverbial \u0027ato\u0027. (2) By implicational scaling, the order of acquisition was predicted. The easiest one is \u0027ga\u0027, the time adverbial, followed by \u0027ni\u0027, \u0027o\u0027, \u0027de\u0027, and finally \u0027kara\u0027, \u0027made\u0027, \u0027ni totte\u0027, and the adverbial \u0027ato\u0027. (3) The particle \u0027wa\u0027 is used from the onset of learning Japanese for these subjects. These results are discussed considering two factors. The first, the setting, takes into account that there is more frequent negotiation of meaning, and a different quality of input in the natural setting when compared to the classroom.
