| 内容記述 | Body dissatisfaction is not only one of risk factors of eating disorder and unhealthy weight control \ but also correlates of depression and low self-esteem. In recent years, fat talk is attracting attention \ as interpersonal communication which elevates body dissatisfaction. Fat talk is communication about \ weight, body size, and exercise among women (e.g. “I’m so fat!”, “This cake looks fattening!”) In the \ present study, we interviewed 10 undergraduate women about their fat talk engagement. Modified \ grounded theory approach was used to analyze the process model of fat talk. Results showed that \ women engaged in fat talk as a gossip but some women engaged in fat talk because of their worries \ about their own bodies. These two backgrounds make listener confused so that listeners feel discomfort \ when they heard friends’ fat talk. In addition, results showed that friends’ responses to fat talk such as\ “You are not fat.” made speaker feel relieved. Therefore, speakers engaged in fat talk when they seek \ for friends’ support. Furthermore, women heard fat talk fell pressure to be thin regardless of speaker’s \ backgrounds of fat talk. Negative effects of fat talk on body dissatisfaction and depression are discussed. |
