| 内容記述 | “The Thirteenth Night”, a famous work by Ichiyo Higuchi, until now has been analyzed only from the point of view stating that the misery of the main character, Oseki, was her personal problem. However I will discuss that such misery was characteristic to most women in the Meiji period of Japan. Moreover, by researching the miserable life of Oseki, I would like to explore the real meaning of the Japanese“Modern” in the Meiji period, which, although brought to Japan from the West, was being realized on the basis of the patriarchal system. In other words, in Japan, based at that time on nationalism centered on the Emperor, modern capitalism was eventually absorbed by the patriarchal system and in result “Modern” was stained by the government's desire to control the nation. | |||||
