Focusing on the area of essay-writing curriculum development, the article outlines the history of curriculum development to encourage proficiency in writing, as well as reporting on problem areas with the development and its process, together with improvement initiatives. Also discussed are the limits of curriculum development based solely on the instructor’s empirical rules, and the contribution that the cognitive model of the writing process makes to curriculum
